Enrichment Clusters Feasts

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It seems like just yesterday we were boarding our flights with our passports in our hands for an exciting journey to destinations around the world! As our trip comes to an end, we would like to invite our families and friends to join us for a celebration. Each enrichment cluster will host an International Feast next week. We would like each cluster and their families to prepare a few dishes that represent the destination they “traveled” to. Students, teachers, and parents will have an opportunity to sample the extraordinary ethnic dishes together. Please see the schedule for the feasts and the room locations below. We would like to make this a rich cultural experience for our students and families. During the feast, students will share what they have learned about their destination. We look forward to learning more about the wonderful culture and foods from each destination. Thank you for all of your support and participation.

New Character Theme: Citizenship

We have just began our last theme of character, Citizenship which encourages children to do their share to make the community a better place, and shows them that even kids their age have the power to make a difference. Here are some things you can do to reinforce the message.

• Have a family discussion about what things you can do together to take more responsibility for Make a plan and do it.
• Participate in a community service project with your children.
• Watch a television program together, and talk about ways in which the characters were either good citizens or bad citizens.
• When you do things that demonstrate good citizenship, be sure to point it out to your child. Your child will learn a lot from watching what you do.

Character Education Update!

Our Character Education Program has truly inspired our students to become better citizens. This year, we have studied the following pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility and Fairness.

Currently, we are immersed in the theme of Caring. We hope to provide a powerful learning experience that will engage our students in listening, thinking, discussing, analyzing, and applying character education, social and emotional learning, and life skills. Our program is designed to help young people become caring, respectful, responsible people who think critically, solve problems non-violently, and make choices based on right and wrong.

Here are some things you can do to reinforce our current theme, Caring.

*Talk with your children about the importance of doing things for other people. Remind them often that they have the power to brighten another person's day through a simple act of kindness.
*Participate in a community service project with your children.
*Try to find things that you can do together to make a difference.
*Catch your child being caring, that is doing something kind and generous for another person.

100 Ways To Show Good Character

This month, we have launched a school-wide contest to encourage our students to come up with 100 ways to show good character. Each student will be encouraged to engage in acts of kindness and caring for someone else. This project will help raise our students’ awareness of caring, respect and fairness towards others. These acts will be displayed on their classroom door for all to admire. Each door display will be entered into our 100 Ways to Show Good Character Contest. The class with the most creative and authentic display will receive a prize! The contest will take place on our 100th day of school, February 11, 2009.
